IE GSO Travel Grant

Liang (Leon) Zeng is being awarded the IE GSO Travel Grant for the fall semester. Many Congratulations!!

Leon will be presenting his work on "The Significance of Creativity in IT Product/Service Development" at the 53rd Annual Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Conference, San Antonio, TX held from October 19-23 2009.

Abstract: It is creativity that ultimately triggers innovations and their commercial success in information technology products and services. Previous research in ergonomic design considers only issues regarding functionality, safety, usability, and affectivity. We first propose a conceptual framework for ergonomic design that high-lights the central role of creativity in achieving synergy of the four preceding design dimensions. Then, a conceptual model of the creative design process for IT products and services is proposed based on the literature in creative cognition and engineering design. The discussion provides insights into how to increase creativity and profitability of IT products and services.

Due to Leon's efforts, the Purdue HFES chapter has submitted an application for recognition as an outstanding chapter, which Leon will be responsible for accepting (assuming that the chapter receives that recognition). He will also supervise the presentation of posters being prepared to showcase the human factors research programs of three laboratories at Purdue in a special session.

Special Seminar - November 2 - 10 a.m. - FRNY 3059

John Siirola, Senior Member of Technical Staff
Exploratory Simulation Technologies
Sandia National Laboratory

“Current Trends in Parallel Computation and the Implications for Decision Support Tools”
Monday, November 2nd, 2009
10:00-11:30 a.m.
FRNY 3059

Abstract: In recent years the historical increase in processor net serial instruction rate has slowed dramatically, with processors first reaching an effective upper limit for clock speed and now approaching apparent limits for microarchitecture efficiency. Current trends in processor development suggest that future performance gains will occur primarily through exploitation of parallelism. While historically many decision support tools have leveraged serial computing, for these tools to continue to leverage the “free” advancements from computing technology in the future, the decision support toolset will need to embrace the use of parallelization.

This talk will survey some of the current and emerging parallel processing environments and present several ongoing efforts for exploiting parallel processing within the context of decision support. While by no means comprehensive, I will focus on three representative efforts: the development of parallel branch and bound algorithms for single-objective optimization, distributed collaborative optimization environments for multi-objective optimization, and massively multithreaded parallel discrete event simulation. Each of these applications leverages distinctly different parallel environments from multi-core to massively parallel to specialty parallel systems in order to provide key capabilities within a general-purpose decision support toolset.

Bio: John Siirola received a BS in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 2000. While there, he participated in the Cooperative Education program with Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, PA, where he focused primarily on process simulation and computer-aided design, including the development of batch process scheduling, configuration management and on-line data reconciliation applications. He went on to obtain his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2005. His research focused on developing agent-based methods for non-convex mixed-integer multi-objective optimization using distributed computer clusters.

John joined Sandia National Laboratories in 2005 and is currently a Senior Member of Technical Staff in the Exploratory Simulation Technologies department. His research activities focus on the development of agent-oriented software applications for simulation and optimization of complex network systems with applications in logistics networks, infrastructure systems, and regional markets. Current projects include developing hybrid modeling environments for capturing continuous, discrete event and agent-based paradigms, and developing frameworks for implementing both agent-based and non-agent-based hybrid optimization algorithms.

"I have always been afraid of banks." Andrew Jackson
The past year & a half has seen "unprecedented" turmoil in the financial markets & the economy in general. Words like subprime, toxic assets, bailout, stimulus, trillion, Madoff and the struggle between "Wall Street" & "main street" have become part of the daily vernacular. A brief historical perspective of the crisis, as well as a view from the inside - but not an insider's view - of the events & the players that led us to this mess, a discussion of personal experiences with Madoff's scam, some glaring concerns about the current recovery plans and some thoughts about how to mitigate the risks & effects of future crises.

If you would like time with Jason, please let Kirsty (kmaccoll@purdue.edu) or Dr. Schmeiser (bruce@purdue.edu) know.

ReadingMate: An Infrared-Camera-Based Content Stabilization Technique to Help Joggers Read While Running on a Treadmill
Computer Human Interaction 2009 on April 4 – 9, 2009 in Boston, MA
Abstract of Presentation: Though reading could be a useful activity while a jogger runs on a treadmill, reading while running can be quite tiresome. In order to alleviate this difficulty, we developed a content stabilization technique, called “ReadingMate,” using head-tracking to track the location of the jogger’s head/eyes and relocate the position of the contents on the screen, so that the contents appear to be stabilized. We conducted a small experiment with ten participants, and eight out of ten reported positive experiences in using ReadingMate. Thus, ReadingMate could be a potential solution for joggers who would like to read while running, and possible future works are also discussed.

An Investigation of the Effect of Non-Identical Replacements on Optimal Maintenance Policies IIE Annual Conference – Industrial Engineering Research Conference on May 30 –June 3, 2009 in Miami, FL
Abstract of Presentation: We consider a system subject to failure, whereupon the system can either be repaired or replaced. A repair action will bring the state of the system to somewhere between good-as-new and bad-as-old, termed general or imperfect repair. The age of the system after repair is modeled according to the so-called virtual age, first proposed by Kijima (1989). The replacement action is assumed to reset system age to zero. In addition, the replacement systems are assumed to have different reliability functions. We formulate and present results for a semi-Markov decision process with state space comprised of the virtual age and number of failures.

IE Alumni - Joseph T. Mallof - 2009 Distinguished Engineering Alumni

2009 Distinguished Engineering Alumni

The Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award is presented to engineering alumni who have distinguished themselves in any field of endeavor that reflects favorably on Purdue University, the engineering profession, or society in general.

In the case of alumni who are engaged in engineering work, their record of accomplishments should indicate a high potential for future growth into positions of increasing responsibility. Normally, only ten awards are made each year.

This year, Joseph T. Mallof, an IE alumni was selected as one of the recipients.

Joseph T. Mallof
President and CEO
World Kitchen, LLC
BSMetE '84

For his recognition as an international leader in the consumer-products industry and his dedication to Purdue University.

Having grown up in Chicago, Joe Mallof liked the idea of applying math and science to solve real-world problems. The first in his family to go to college, Mallof admits to not knowing much about engineering schools then. A respected friend of his father was a Purdue engineer and had sent two of his own children to Purdue, so Mallof followed suit.

What did he like most about his time on campus? "Honestly, I loved the academic curriculum and the new worlds it opened up to me," Mallof says. "I even liked the courses outside of industrial engineering, such as a thermodynamics course where a professor built a mathematical model of a power plant during just one class."

Mallof also had Professor Jim Barany for several honors' classes. "He was my senior paper advisor and I was his teaching assistant," he says. "He gave me a lot of responsibility and trusted me, even when I screwed up. And this taught me a lot about life beyond academics."

After graduation, Mallof applied his engineering and management skills to the consumer goods industry. Over the years he demonstrated a consistent record of achieving profitable growth in a global economy for four major firms–all leaders in their field.

Now the leader at World Kitchen, Mallof finds himself applying skills and concepts he first encountered at Purdue almost every day in his job. "Sometimes the ideas have been updated to the current reality, but the underlying principles are the same," he says. "However, my biggest challenge today is developing the right strategy and then aligning and motivating the organization behind it."

With the success of World Kitchen brands that include CorningWare®, Pyrex®, Corelle®, Baker's Secret®, and many more, Mallof continues his successful track record in running a business with approximately 2,900 employees in the United States, Canada, and Asia-Pacific regions.

Mallof also envisions engineers moving into more non-industry fields, including government operations and healthcare to address societal problems like water quality and supply. "An engineering education must evolve to address these new areas," he says, "perhaps making biology as important as physics and chemistry."

His interest in supporting engineering education, and Purdue's School of Industrial Engineering in particular, is evidenced by his role on the school's advisory board and the Professor James W. Barany Scholarship that Mallof and his wife Virginia started in 2005. The endowment, which provides monetary support to undergraduates, honors the great impact Professor Barany had on Mallof.

As for the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award, Mallof finds the recognition very personally satisfying. "But as important," he says, "I hope that my story in some small way serves as a model to others."

ABE-IE Social - Time changed to 7:30 pm

At 6 pm on Friday, Feb 20th, the creator of PhD comics, Dr. Jorge Cham, will be giving a talk on "The Power of Procrastination" in CL-50, Room 224. This is being sponsored by PGSG. Rather than have our social conflict with this event, we have decided to push the event back to 7:30 pm to allow students to attend both the presentation and the social.

IE GSO JOINT SOCIAL EVENT with ABE GSA
Time: 7:30 PM on Friday 20 February
Location: The Vault
(205 N. 2nd St. in downtown Lafayette, across from the train station)

Play billiards with your IE friends, meet some of the Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) grad students and enjoy some FREE appetizers!!

Dr. Landry's Lab Tour - Photos are posted

On Feb 3, a tour was given to all IE students interested. We were able to test tactile devices, shoot chickens, and fly/crash planes. Thanks to David Rozovski for taking the time to show us the lab and to Dr. Landry for allowing us to visit. All who attended had a great time and learned a lot!

Sports Tournament - The Outcome

Sad to say that we did not bring the trophy from the CHE-IE Sport Tournament back to Grissom Hall, but happy to share that we had a great showing of participants and supporters. Around 25 industrial engineering students, faculty, and staff came to play volleyball, basketball, and dodgeball.

Thanks to all the IE graduate students who took time out of their weekend to come and join in the festivities. A great time was had by everyone - except Dr. Yi who is probably recovering from a nasty headache - however glad to report he is doing fine and plans on participating in basketball next time!
After the sporting event, Forney Hall's atrium served as a delightful venue for celebrating the successful day. Pizza, drinks, and yummy desserts were provided and gobbled down!

A big congratulations to the Chemical Engineering graduate students!! Thanks for a wonderful afternoon of camaraderie and sports. We look forward to many more opportunities to interact with the ChemE graduate students.

From the ChemE GSO President...
On behalf of the Chemical Engineering Graduate Students, I would like to thank the IE GSO, grad students, faculty and staff for helping organize and participating in the ChemE-IE tournament. We all had loads of fun and really hope that it becomes a regular event. And most of all, we got to know a lot of people from IE and hopefully that will increase our interactions with them!
