Upcoming Events

Prior to seminar today, we will have snacks in GRIS 360 from 4:00-4:30. The IE GSO hopes to see everyone there!! The plan is to have a weekly Seminar Snack Time prior to seminar each week.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, Aug 26th) is the picnic at Squirrel Park which is located on the corner of State Street and Airport Road next to Purdue Village. The food will be Jimmy John subs, chips, drinks, and dessert. This starts at 5 pm. This will be location even if it is raining. If the weather is nice, then we will have Frisbee, soccer, and other sports available.

Friday is the PGSG picnic at Squirrel Park – Sandy sent an email out last week about this picnic.

IE GSO Orientation Social

A group of 30 students had a great time going on a Photo Scavenger Hunt followed by a social at Boiler Market. The challenge included the following tasks...

1. Tick tock, goes a big loud clock
Get a picture of everyone in the team looking at their watches in front of this location.

2. That's one small step for [a] man, one giant l
eap for mankind."
This quote is from a Purdue alum… take a picture with him in front of his building.

3. H20 is what an Engineer would call water
Take a photo with this famous fountain on campus.

4. Old John gave the land to start the university
Find his final resting place (grave) and everyone should act like a zombie in the photo!

5. This large block letter P sculpture symbolizes the importance of lifelong learning and self-improvement
Take a picture of people making other letters with the use of their bodies.

6. The chosen one is called Harry
But in this location lots of engineers are hanging out. Take a picture with the team reading books.

7. It all depends on your perspective
You would seem like a giant compared to this small scaled model of Purdue. Take a picture with one team member acting like Godzilla attacking Purdue.

8. Everyday reading is fun
Take a picture with all the team members and the Exponent in a unique way!

9. Where the wild things are?
Take a picture being wild in front of a Greek (Fraternity) House or with an actual animal

10. The expression Go Ugly Early started at this sweet shop
Take a picture showing us your sweetest look in front of Harry's

11. Feeling hungry late at night?
Go to this cafĂ© – they are open until 4 am! You can eat lots of Rice here. Take a group shot with the sign out front!

12. There are lots cool things on campus to see…
Take a picture where the team members are hard to find but are present. This is the “Can you find us?” photo.

13. STOP, Yield, Walk – Follow the sign
Do exactly what the sign says (any sign can work). The more creative, the better :)

Here are the photos from the event.

ABE-IE Social - Time changed to 7:30 pm

At 6 pm on Friday, Feb 20th, the creator of PhD comics, Dr. Jorge Cham, will be giving a talk on "The Power of Procrastination" in CL-50, Room 224. This is being sponsored by PGSG. Rather than have our social conflict with this event, we have decided to push the event back to 7:30 pm to allow students to attend both the presentation and the social.

IE GSO JOINT SOCIAL EVENT with ABE GSA
Time: 7:30 PM on Friday 20 February
Location: The Vault
(205 N. 2nd St. in downtown Lafayette, across from the train station)

Sports Tournament - The Outcome

Sad to say that we did not bring the trophy from the CHE-IE Sport Tournament back to Grissom Hall, but happy to share that we had a great showing of participants and supporters. Around 25 industrial engineering students, faculty, and staff came to play volleyball, basketball, and dodgeball.

Thanks to all the IE graduate students who took time out of their weekend to come and join in the festivities. A great time was had by everyone - except Dr. Yi who is probably recovering from a nasty headache - however glad to report he is doing fine and plans on participating in basketball next time!
After the sporting event, Forney Hall's atrium served as a delightful venue for celebrating the successful day. Pizza, drinks, and yummy desserts were provided and gobbled down!

A big congratulations to the Chemical Engineering graduate students!! Thanks for a wonderful afternoon of camaraderie and sports. We look forward to many more opportunities to interact with the ChemE graduate students.

From the ChemE GSO President...
On behalf of the Chemical Engineering Graduate Students, I would like to thank the IE GSO, grad students, faculty and staff for helping organize and participating in the ChemE-IE tournament. We all had loads of fun and really hope that it becomes a regular event. And most of all, we got to know a lot of people from IE and hopefully that will increase our interactions with them!

Change of Plans for Sporting Event

The co-rec double booked the facility for Saturday and we will not be able to have the event starting at 2 pm. The event now starts at 5:30 pm in the co-rec on the 2nd floor in the main gym on courts 1 and 2. This will still be followed by a pizza party afterwards in Forney Hall atrium. Sorry for the short notice. Please notify Chris Saldana(csaldana@purdue.edu) if you will not be attending.

NOTE
  • You must wear a white or grey shirt if you are participating - ChemE will be in black.
  • Parking may be a problem due to a volleyball competition that is occurring at the co-rec so make sure to come early.
  • If you are playing a sport, make sure to be there at least 15 minutes before the start time below.
  • The team rosters are below.
  • ChemE only has 6 or 7 basketball players so we may need a few of our basketball players to participate in dodgeball or volleyball.
  • Bring water or plan on drinking from the water fountain.
  • If you do not want to participate on a sports team, we would like to invite you to come cheer for us and/or celebrate with us in Forney Hall.

NEW Schedule of Events
5:30 - 6:15 Volleyball
6:15 - 6:45 Basketball
6:45 - 7:30 Dodgeball
8:00 - ?? Dinner
